Senior Project & Program Manager Interview Master Pack
Prepare for senior delivery interviews the way you would a bid.
The question set, the answer structures and the worked examples. Yours to keep.
- Answer senior scenario questions with structure rather than anecdote
- Describe a recovered project credibly, including what went wrong
- Go into a panel knowing which evidence each question is testing for
The problem
Senior delivery interviews test judgement, and most preparation tests recall
At senior level the interview is not checking whether you know what a risk register is. It is checking whether you can take an ambiguous commercial situation, structure it under pressure, and defend a decision you have not had time to research. Candidates who have run large programs successfully still lose these interviews, because the thing being assessed is the ability to make the reasoning visible, and that is a separate skill from having done the work.
- Answers that describe what happened rather than why you decided it
- Strong delivery experience that comes out as an unstructured story
- Being asked for a specific example and reaching for a general one
- Losing a role to somebody with a thinner record and a clearer structure
Why the usual approach does not settle it
What people reach for first, and where it stops
Interview question lists
A list of questions tells you what might be asked. It does not tell you what a strong answer contains, which is the only part that changes the outcome.
Generic STAR coaching
STAR is a container. At senior level the interviewer is testing the content you put in it: the commercial trade-off, the stakeholder you had to overrule, the number you committed to and why.
Rehearsing your best project
One well-told story covers three questions and leaves the other nine. A panel is deliberately probing for range.
What changes
What Senior Project & Program Manager Interview Master Pack changes about the decision
Preparation becomes a bid, not a revision session
You work out what this role is actually buying, what evidence proves you have it, and where your record is thin, then prepare against that rather than against a generic question bank.
Structures for the questions that decide the outcome
Commercial judgement, recovering a failing program, overruling a senior stakeholder, defending an estimate. Each with a structure that makes the reasoning visible in under three minutes.
Worked answers at the standard the role expects
Not model answers to memorise. Examples of what a senior answer contains, so you can see the difference between describing a program and demonstrating judgement about one.
The questions you ask them
At this level the questions you ask are assessed as closely as the answers you give. The pack covers what to ask, and what the answer tells you about whether to take the role.
How it works
The sequence
Senior delivery interviews test judgement under pressure, not framework recall. This pack works through the situations that actually get asked, the evidence a senior interviewer is listening for, and how to structure an answer about a project that went wrong without losing the room.
- 1
Map the role
Work out which of the four senior delivery archetypes the role actually is, because a recovery role and a scale-up role reward opposite instincts.
- 2
Audit your evidence against it
For each thing the role is buying, identify the example that proves it and the ones that do not. The gaps are where preparation is worth anything.
- 3
Build the answers
Use the structures to convert your examples into answers that lead with the decision and the reasoning rather than the chronology.
- 4
Rehearse against pressure, not against the list
The pack includes the follow-up questions a panel asks when an answer sounds rehearsed, which is where most senior interviews are actually lost.
Why it holds up
What makes the result defensible
Each of these is something you can check before you buy, and hold KnownShift to afterwards. None of them asks you to take a result on trust.
Written from the hiring side of the table
The standard reflected here is the one used to assess senior delivery candidates, not the one described in general interview advice.
Structures, not scripts
A memorised answer fails the first follow-up. Each structure is a way of thinking under pressure that survives being interrupted.
Yours to keep and reuse
Editable files on your own machine, useful again at the next role and at the internal promotion conversation in between.
